A 19-year-old special education teacher auditioned for American Idol alongside her best friend, who has Down syndrome.

This special education teacher auditioned for American Idol and gave it her all. He is a big reason she still sings.

Maddie Zahm is a special education teacher who loves music. Music has always been an important part of her life, but her enthusiasm for it waned in high school. She was diagnosed with a condition that caused her to gain a significant amount of weight. She didn’t feel like herself and was self-conscious about her appearance. It caused her to lose a lot of self-confidence. And, for a time, she avoided music until she met her best friend. 00

She stumbled into a music class for musicians with disabilities one day. That was the best mistake she ever made because it introduced her to her best friend, Markus. Markus was standing in front of everyone, singing a Katy Perry song.

And Maddie knew right then that she had to have him as a friend. She and Markus formed such a strong bond, and his friendship gave her the confidence she needed to resume singing.

When she told the judges that she bought Markus with her, they wanted to invite him to come in and sit with them while Maddie auditioned. He was so proud of Maddie and wore a shirt that said, “His Best Friend Is the Next American Idol”.

For her audition, Maddie sang “New Rules” by Dua Lipa and she nailed it! When she was singing, Katy’s jaw dropped. All of the judges were taken back by how beautiful her voice is.

The judges wanted to hear Markus sing a song that the two of them always sing together after Maddie auditioned. As a result, Markus joined Maddie in front of the judges’ panel and performed Katy Perry’s “Fireworks.” Markus was nervous, but he was excited to be singing alongside his best friend. Maddie is obviously going to Hollywood, and it’s all thanks to Markus for assisting Maddie in resuming her musical career.
