A 92-Year-Old Dementia Patient Performs Moonlight Sonata…

The audience is wowed by the 92-year-old pianist. Elaine Lebar has dementia, yet she remembers her love of music. In 2019, her version of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata went viral on TikTok. Elaine replies, “I’m not sure about it,” before beginning the third movement of Beethoven’s famous piece. While her daughter Randy Lebar was recording, Lebar performed at a nursing facility in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

Randi stated that she was unable to visit her mother for several months this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. When she was able to return, she posted a TikTok video of Elaine playing “to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the impact pandemic-related limitations have on this demographic and their family.” Requests began to appear soon after, according to Lebar.

One was for the Moonlight Sonata, which she remembered recording in 2019. “I had no idea this would become viral,” Randy admitted. “My mother, a professional musician, has terrible dementia, but still finds meaning in her life at the piano.”
