Green Day began in the punk rock scene around Berkeley’s 924 Gilman Street punk club. Their first releases, on the independent label Lookout! The band’s popularity grew as a result of their records.
As a result, the band, along with other Californian punks (The Offspring, Rancid), sparked massive interest in punk music not only in the United States but around the world. Green Day influenced bands like Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan, and All Time Low.
In a poll conducted by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011, the trio was voted the best punk band in music history. Green Day was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. The band went on to become one of the most popular and successful punk rock bands of all time. Green Day records have sold over 85 million copies as of 2012, with 30 of those sold in the United States.
