Adopting a kid is one of the most difficult decisions a parent can make. Regardless of how much parents love their children, circumstances may dictate that it is in the child’s best interests to live with another family. The decision is made out of love, not malice, despite the fact that it is painful.
Because of their youth or insufficient financial resources, children raised by others have the greatest possible future. Although many adopted children will never meet their biological family, it is possible for adopted children to build bonds with their biological parents on rare occasions. This largely depends on the form of adoption—for example, open adoption allows the biological parents to remain involved in their child’s life in some ways. With the growth of genetic testing, many children now know who their birth parents are. However, not every adoption results in contact between the birth parent and the child.
An unexpected turn of events can lead to unexpected reunions. Nathan Boos of Tilden, Wisconsin, who was adopted shortly after birth, discovered that his coworker was his biological father. Bob Degaro of Chippewa Falls had no idea he’d already met the son he’d abandoned decades before. This lovely 2018 story demonstrates that reality may be stranger than fiction at times, and those good things can happen when you least expect them! Today, the two men are working hard to build a good friendship.

Growing up, Nathan Boos of Wisconsin had a nice childhood. Boos was aware that he was adopted, but he never asked his parents about his biological family. “Growing up, I was always aware that I was adopted, but it never occurred to me that I would ever discover my biological parents,” Boos told WEAU News. However, Boos’ parents knew who his biological parents were but never told him because he never asked.
Boos was unaware that he had already met his biological father! Boos was working as a truck driver at the time, and Nathan met one of his coworkers, Robert Degaro, at the truck company, Rock Solid Transport in Chippewa Falls. Nathan and Robert spent a lot of time together and finally became Facebook friends. Nathan’s mother made an unexpected discovery thanks to Facebook. She informed her kid that his father was also a truck driver and attempted to locate him, only to discover that the two were already buddies. “She simply went through my Facebook friend list and brought up his photo, and I shouted, ‘Get out of here,'” Boos explained.
We can only imagine how shocking it must have been to discover that his father was already a friend of his, both online and offline! Boos went out to Degaro to confirm the news and inquired about his birth mother. This was going to be a wonderful time in Degaro’s life.
“He messaged me on Facebook one day and asked me if I knew his biological mother and I’m like yeah, that’s my ex-wife … and I about fell out of my seat … I’m like, oh my God,” Degaro told WEAU News. Boos then came to know that his biological father and mother had two other children, which made them his biological siblings! Though the news outlet does not report upon whether the siblings and biological mother have formed a relationship with Boos, it is clear that the already existing friendship he had with Degaro has helped them to strengthen their relationship.
Speaking of the decision to give Boos up for adoption, Degaro said that financial matters ultimately led to the decision to give their son up so that he could have a better life. “Back then I wasn’t much of a dad. His biological mom had chosen the adoptive parents because they were somewhat related…distant cousins I believe but I didn’t know that,” Degaro said. While they continue to build on their bond, Boos says that they are taking it one day at a time, or as truck drivers say, one mile at a time.
“It’s still kind of a shock and there are days I’m not sure exactly what to say or how to act…I mean he is my son but we didn’t have that father-son relationship growing up and then we became working partners before we knew who we really were,” Degaro told the news outlet. It is a strange situation for both men, but it is clear that they want to remain in each others’ lives.
It may take some time to rebalance the connection to something more familiar, but the two truck drivers have already started! Boos was due to marry in 2018, and Degaro was ecstatic to be a part of his son’s special day. Heartwarming stories like this one demonstrate the power of love and family, as well as how fate can sometimes lead us down unexpectedly lovely pathways.
A similar story was reported in 2017 about two brothers who were reunited after completing a DNA test. Kieron Graham was aware that he was adopted and was always inquisitive about his original family, so his adoptive parents surprised him with a DNA test as an early Christmas present, according to TODAY. His results revealed that his brother, Vincent Ghant, lived only 15 minutes away and attended the same institution as him! Interestingly, both of the brothers were studying political science, so they most likely passed each other frequently without realizing they were related!
“It was incredible,” Graham recalls. “We merely stared at each other, both crying… I knew my mother was in a difficult situation: she was a single mother working 12 to 15 hours a day as a nurse.” They also met their biological mother and discovered that they have another sibling, Christian. The three brothers continue to spend time together and reconnect. “Every time we get together, we make memories and build that tie,” Ghant explained to TODAY.
