A video of four babies lying on top of their mother and giggling adorably in unison won the award for America’s Funniest Home Videos in the early 2000s. A few years later, the “laughing quads” video was declared the “Funniest Video of All Time,” earning the Matthias family $250,000 and a place in home video history.
The girls—Grace, Emily, Mary Claire, and Anna—were six years old when their video won the top award, and in the years since, the Matthias family has appeared on numerous television and talk shows, including a stop on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The quads are now 16 years old, and the family wonders, “Oprah, where are they now?” That video has a lot of staying power.
“This video is still popular,” Allison’s mother says. “I think this is one of those videos where you just can’t help but laugh,” dad Steve adds. “There’s something about the syncopation when they stop and laugh.” It’s just a contagious laugh.”
The girls are identical quadruplets, but their interests have drawn them apart as they’ve grown. “We are only similar and different in what we are interested in,” Grace says. “For instance, Mary Claire and Emily… They like to create digital art on their computer. And Anna adores the orchestra. And I enjoy taking photographs.”
