Gymnastics on wheels is a discipline that has its roots in Germany. Wheel gymnasts use a big wheel or hoop known as a Rhönrad, gymnastics wheel, German wheel, or, formerly, a yro wheel, aero wheel, or Rhon rod, to conduct exercises. Two parallel circles are joined by six spokes to form the huge wheel. Two straightforward tubes—two with handles and two with footrests. In order for the gymnast to be able to hold on to the grips when fully extended, the diameter of the wheel is determined by the gymnast’s length.

Wheels come in diameters ranging from 130 to 245 cm. Wheels can weigh between 40 and 60 kg. They come in a variety of hues and depths. Otto Faik created the wheel at Schönau a der Brand in 1925. Fake, a blacksmith’s grandson, was motivated by a memory of a day when he was a boy in Reichenbach and slid down a hill while holding sticks between two rings forged by his grandfather.

Under the heading “Wheel-gymnastic and sports equipment,” he filed for a patent. In Ludwigshafen am Rhein, between 1920 and 1922, he created the wheel on the property of the VSK Germany sports club, of which he served as founding chairman. The name “Rönrad” has been registered and protected since 1926; the patent was granted on November 8, 1925. Rhönrad made its debut at the Düsseldorf GeSoLei trade show in 1926.

The sport was demonstrated at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but it was not added as an Olympic discipline. Although there are wheel groups in many nations and the International Wheel Gymnastics Federation hosts a world championship competition every two years, Germany continues to be the primary focus of wheel gymnastics. In order to instruct and educate individuals of all ages in wheeled gymnastics, former world champion Wolfgang Bintzle moved from Germany to Chicago and now owns his own business, WHEEL JAM.
