This Minor Change in the Audition of the AGT Football Choir Earned Them a Standing Ovation

The Players Choir did not perform on America’s Got Talent on June 14th. They came here to win.

Patti LaBelle saw the choir, which is made up of genuine NFL players who perform as a group for various organizations.

“We got on the stage in 2004 with a gospel concert we do every year, every Super Bowl—called it’s Celebration of Gospel,” one of the players explained. “Patti LaBelle then took the stage and exclaimed, ‘I see all these good-looking men.’ I’ll see who can sing. She started passing the mic around and discovered that some of us had some skill. That’s how it all began.”

Another member then stated, “We formed the Players Choir and would travel around in the community to various fundraising events…

We make it our mission to convey light and joy.”

And now they’re competing on America’s Got Talent. They sang the classic “Lean On Me” for their audition, and while the Judges enjoyed it, Simon Cowell had a suggestion that improved the performance even more. “I’m curious,” Cowell said. “All I want to hear is your voices together. Can we do it all a cappella?”

The performance improved dramatically after the Players Choir removed their backup track. The judges gave them a standing ovation right away. “That’s why he’s Simon,” Heidi Klum explained. “He always brings out the best in everyone, because you all sounded so much better. Not because you didn’t sound fine before, but you harmonized beautifully together without the track. Everyone was completely on point.”
