Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door grew in popularity as a result of its cover versions. One of the cover versions of this song, performed by the German band Selig, appears on the soundtrack of the 1997 film Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, which is based on the Bob Dylan song of the same name.

The title of the song was used in the title of the Japanese animated film Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and Bob Dylan served as a model for the appearance of the film’s main antagonist. Hideaki Anno used it in the subtitle of Evangelion episode 24 (EPISODE:24′ The Beginning and the End, or “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”).
